Invention by design: How engineers get from thought to thing. Henry Petroski, in his classic book To Engineer is Human, says that in his field, failure is almost a prerequisite for success, because only by reaching a point of failure can you define the limits of possibility. To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design. Since the book was published in 1982, the examples employed are somewhat dated. To Engineer is Human - Henry Petroski. Henry Petroski is a professor of civil engineering and history at Duke University. I would recommend reading “Success through Failure: The Paradox of Design” and “To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design” by Henry Petronius, an accomplished author and civil engineer. His first book, To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design, appeared in 1985. Recently I read a compelling book published in the 1980′s called To Engineer Is Human. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering and professor of history, is an expert in the implications of failure for engineering. Perhaps one of my favorite non-fiction books, Henry Petroski looks at a very different aspect of engineering that has not really been touched on before; the role of failure in design. On a dusty bookshelf at home, I have the book, "To Engineer is Human - The Role of Failure in Successful Design" by Henry Petroski. The KC Hyatt walkway collapse is the opening topic of that book. A good book on this (parallel) kind of process: To Engineer is Human, the role of Failure in Successful Design; Petroski, Henry. Other interesting reading on this general topic is Henry Petroski's To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design. A quarter century ago, in his classic book To Engineer is Human, Henry Petroski demonstrated rather convincingly that failure is indispensable to successful design. I am reminded of Henry Petroki's brilliant book - “to engineer is human”. I bought a used copy of To Engineer Is Human : The Role of Failure in Successful Design sometime last year & it finally migrated to the top of Mount ToBeRead.
